Panduan Pembelian Tiket Keretapi KTMB 2018

Feasibility study of railroad infrastructure in Borneo?

Our railroad network in peninsular Malaysia has undergone a lot of transformation since the time when it was introduced for the first time in 19th century (Taiping – Kuala Sepetang Line, no longer exists today).

Apart from Electrified Double Tracking Project (EDTP), we have also made significant progress in railroad industry by having our own rolling stock (trainset) assembling plant, operated by CRRC Zhuzhou from China. Apart from job opportunities created, indirectly we are developing our own talents in railroad industry.

(1) The atmosphere is Borneo is a little bit different compared to Peninsular Malaysia. People in Borneo would like to have more autonomy in making decisions for their own state. Landslide victory of Adenan Satem in recent state election has enlightened us on their desire since Adenan is seen as a CM that fights for more autonomy for his people.

(2) Other than having control of their immigration system (it is illegal for non-residents of Sarawak to stay more than 90 days in the state without proper permit), issues were also raised by the CM about non-Sarawakian workforce of a local oil and gas company operating in Sarawak.

What does (1) and (2) has to do with railroad infrastructure? Well, due to (1) and (2), I think it is best if concerned citizens from Sarawak to carry out their own feasibility study of developing railroad infrastructure in the state. In my opinion, railroad enthusiasts from Peninsular will be more than glad to offer any kind of assistance required, subject to restrictions by the democratically-elected state government. Of note, Sabah already has its own railway, owned by its state government.

Upon our checkup on Firefly website, we found a good deal for students to take advantage of ticket discount on Firefly!

Please note that the discount only applies to flight fare. Taxes, surcharges and fees are excluded and their costs must be borne by KADS1M holders.

Since this is a 1Malaysia initiative, it is a new effort by the government and very prone to changes and abolishment in the future.

Please visit Firefly website for more information and changes in the future (if there is any).

Although Firefly uses smaller aircrafts, it allows you to have up to 20 kg of baggage allowance, apart from compliementary snacks and drinks onboard. We find it to be very convenient to customers. However, if you opt for no-frills carrier, then we think AirAsia should be your choice of airline.

Here is more information about the announcement:

KTM Intercity Service Interrupted at East Coast

KTM Berhad Logo

Some KTM Intercity services along East Coast was interrupted due to the derailment of a railcar at KM 274 between Merapoh and Chegar Perah on Monday night, as reported by a news article from BERNAMA.

One of the 10 railcars were derailed. The said train is Ekspres Wau 29, heading southbound to Kuala Lumpur from Tumpat. All 437 passengers of the train were left unhurt.

According to a statement by KTM Berhad, the services affected are: Ekspres Senandung Wau 29, Ekspres Senandung Wau 28, Ekspres Senandung Timuran 17 and Ekspres Senandung Timuran 26.

Electrified Double Tracking Project to Subang Skypark Terminal

KTM Berhad Logo

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is proposing an Electrified Double Tracking Project (EDTP) on an 8.1 km spur between the existing railway track in Subang Jaya to Subang Skypark Terminal.

KTM Berhad did not mention explicitly how the spur is going to be used. However, we think that they will provide rail connectivity as a better method of transport between existing public transport system (KTM Komuter) and Subang Skypark. We have been to Subang Skypark several times before and the connectivity is quite limited. Currently, our preferred method of public transport to reach the terminal is by using RapidKL bus. That can be inconvenient for some users. Furthermore, the usage of RapidKL bus might be cumbersome during traffic rush hours.

For quick information, Subang Skypark is a small airport located in Subang, Selangor. It serves mainly turboprop aircraft and is currently a hub for Firefly Airlines.

Therefore, all members of public are invited to check on the proposal and give feedback to said parties in a document which can be found here.

Johor State Government Has Long-Term Plan to Boost Public Transport

Malaysian 1-meter-gauge rail extending to horizon

Johor state government has recently came up with an awesome long-term plan to improve the public transport service in the state. The plan was developed together with Iskandar Regional Development Authority and the Land Public Transport Commission (Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat – SPAD), reports a news article dated Nov 13th 2013 from NST.

The plan is made to reduce the dependency on private vehicles and also to implement public transport systems that are more efficient and modern. Apart from urban areas, stage bus system would also be improved. Johor’s Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the Bus Rapid Transit System would be the main public transport for all ten corridors of Iskandar Malaysia. With the anticipated rapid growth of Iskandar Malaysia, the plan is hoped to be a successful one with ample integration between different transport services.

KLIA Ekspres Website is Back Online

KLIA Ekspres

For several months, the KLIA Ekspres website has been inaccessible for the users. We are not sure why but there is not news available. There is a telephone number in our directory but we think it will do us nothing good if we call the customer support. Being a service provider, the operating company, Express Rail Link (ERL) cannot simply let this matter pass through without any concrete solution.

Gladly enough, the website is now accessible again. This is a huge milestone, especially as the opening date of KLIA2 draws near. More users, especially tourists would love to do some research before they begin their travel. Malaysia as the 2nd most visited country in Asia after China should spearhead the effort to improve communication with tourists.

We are not sure about this but we think the website might have a new look plus some added information. The most notable one is the online promotion a well as added information about KLIA2 service.

As a quick update, KLIA2 will be part of KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit route. The inter-terminal fare will be charged at RM 2 per journey. While this is really cheap, we think it is a better idea to abolish it altogether to eliminate unnecessary congestion as well as improve inter terminal connectivity. Perhaps the added revenue is necessary to ensure the financial feasibility of KLIA2 operation. Throughout the years, we are aware that AirAsia is in close consultation in building KLIA2 and there are several demands that they need. The basic idea is charging users only when necessary and also try to go the cheapest way.
